The PPPH is a unique center combining basic physiological research with clinically relevant outcomes. Research is conducted out of three main locations.
Within the larger setting of the Physical Activity and Diabetes Lab (1-052) on the first floor of the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Research Innovation, we have the luxury of a private research gym for exercise and training related interventions. This fitness centre incorporates state-of-the-art aerobic and resistance training equipment in a quiet and comfortable gym setting staffed by knowledgeable personnel. This fitness centre includes large, accessible change rooms with showers. We also have an enclosed child play area that is available for use (with notice).
In addition to our gym, we have a fully-equipped integrative physiology laboratory. This allows us to measure fitness on the treadmill, recumbent bike or arm ergometer. We have state-of-the art equipment including peripheral and transcranial ultrasound to non-invasively assess peripheral and brain blood vessel function. We can measure blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory variables on a beat-by-beat or breath-by-breath basis. Our set-up includes the capability to measure autonomic and sympathetic function. Combined, we are in the unique position to be able to gain a comprehensive understanding of the physiological adaptations to pregnancy and the postpartum period, as well as how these adaptations change with exercise or pregnancy complications (e.g., gestational diabetes, preeclampsia).
